The Indian Institute of Technology - IIT Kharagpur has partnered with Wipro which is one of the biggest global technological, consultant business industry to conduct research on 5G and Artificial Intelligence.
IIT Kharagpur signed MoU with the company to collaborate on industry-focused collaborative research work for commercial use. The research results will be used for service and technology development for customers in Wipro.
The Institute and Wipro will conduct joint research on 5G Communication technologies to find out its potential, prospects and efficient usage for future for personal and professional communication sectors. IIT Kharagpur will share the research results with Wipro which will give a bigger picture of the industrial world. The Institute will also conduct workshops and seminars on 5G connectivity.
IIT Kharagpur is working on some specific research areas on 5G which are, front and backhaul optical networks, interplanetary networks, vehicular ad hoc, channel estimation, multipleinput and multiple output (MIMO), optimised resource allocation, millimetre wave communications, multimedia transmission, secure communication, and cross-layer optimisation. The student research groups in IIT Kharagpur are also researching on topics such as Software Defined Networking (SDN) and Network Function Virtualisation (NFV).
The end to end technology, cloud computing, network hardware systems for this research projects will be provided by Wipro.
The Indian Institute of Technology - IIT Kharagpur is also initiating research projects on Artificial Intelligence and their uses under the same umbrella of Wipro.
Wipro has already developed Wipro HOLMES ™ artificial intelligence system for automation development. For further research and development on the ongoing research projects of Wipro, it will support IIT Kharagpur.

Prof. Partha Pratim Chakrabarty who is the current director of IIT Kharagpur has welcomed the initiative of Wipro and said that it will help in technological advancements through co-innovation projects. He also added that 5G and AI as a future technology have immense potential and at this time, IIT Kharagpur can be a pioneer when it comes to these future technologies and research.
