Disasters, either natural or man-made have a severe impact on the individual society to the whole nation. The increasing frequency of disasters has become one development of the nation. The ironic fact is that disasters are not avoidable completely. In this perspective, civil engineering can play crucial role by contributing to the disaster management field in two important ways: in the setting of design and safety standards, and the actual design and construction of infrastructure used to prevent damage and losses caused by hazards. In this paper the potential role of Civil Engineers in disaster management has been critically reviewed using SWOT analysis. It has been recognized that civil engineers have been in the forefront in developing safe built environment, public policy, global performance-based codes and standards and research agenda as a mitigation tool to combat with various disasters. It has been also realized that despite of several challenges and constraints, civil engineers can play very crucial and even much more diversified role in disaster management activities. You can do a lot with a degree in civil engineering, in fact I’d argue that it's the most versatile of all the engineering fields. The four primary branches of civil engineering are structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, water resources, and transportation engineering. Compared to other engineering disciplines, civil engineers tend to work on larger scale projects such as canals, reservoirs, airports, bridges, etc. In addition to these main branches, many of the fundamentals of civil engineering overlap with other fields such as mechanical or aerospace. Civil engineers work in both the private and public sectors, and opportunities exist almost anywhere in the world. To encourage quality education LPU provides rampant experiential opportunity for our students to grow. LPU has become the only private university to obtain the NABL Accreditation of its laboratory testing facility under which the Unilab-Mechanical Testing of building and construction materials in the School of Civil Engineering, LPU is NABL accredited. There are certain markable points that makes LPU better for Civil Engineering, like:- • LPU prepares their students from day 1 to become the most sought after civil engineers through meticulously designed framework. • Students are instilled with latest advancements in the field of Civil Engineering through construction site visits, workshops as well as competitive workshops. • As an LSCE student, you will be adept at industry-specific software like STAAD-Pro, Etabs, MX Road, and, MS Project. • As per Payscale, proficiency in “MS Project” is the most sought-after skill in a Civil Engineer • The Curriculum meets the industry expectations, and especially emphasizes on practical than theory

There is a big role of civil engineer in disaster management, during construction of buildings and other infrastructure he should keep in mind different disasters, like Earthquake, Floods, Landslides. he can use different measures to reduce the impact of disasters, Earthquake does not kill people but buildings and other infrastructure do there also economical loss. So it is very important to teach the base of this course at the grass root level ie at the time when one is learning engineering itself. As a passout of LPU Mechanical Engineering I had multiple opportunities to hop in the School of Civil Engineering which was adjacent to our school and due to many events played together I had few friends in civil engineering too who are well placed in overseas construction company. To me Civil Engineering at LPU is the best. Here are my reasons :- LPU has become the only private university to obtain the NABL Accreditation of its laboratory testing facility under which the Unilab-Mechanical Testing of building and construction materials in the School of Civil Engineering, LPU is NABL accredited. Live cases of water logging, dampness, civil works are given to a team of two and are asked to work out solutions. This helps in practical learning of the students. LPU moves one step ahead.

With strong building foundation, the risk of collapsing of any building can be easily prevented. Rescue operations and safety escape routes must be established in every building along with possible reconstruction of the entire building is controlled by a structural engineer. There are good employment opportunities in disaster management in government as well as in private organizations. The work profile varies like teaching, research, consultancy, documentation, training organizer, field training and mock driller expert. Civil engineering works such as buildings and infrastructure are the carriers of human civilization. ... From this viewpoint, many so-called natural disasters such as earthquakes, strong winds, floods, landslides, and debris flows are substantially due to civil engineering defects rather than the actual natural hazards. As an alumni of LPU I can say that LPU is the best University to join to pursue your dreams and securing your future with a good job. LPU's commitment to teaching excellence and providing the highest quality education to its students has once again brought laurels.
