B.Sc Nursing Syllabus, Topics and Weightage

The Indian Nursing Council (INC) describes “ Nursing as a profession… a discipline which utilises knowledge that has been derived from the Sciences, Arts, Humanities and Human Experience... ” This means that nursing education encompasses a vast and varied understanding of human beings, wellness & health, compassion, medical knowledge and professional etiquette wrapped up in one curriculum.

The Indian Nursing Council has defined a certain set of aims and objectives of B.Sc Nursing which a graduate of the course should instil at the end of the programme. The curriculum of a B.Sc Nursing programme has been designed keeping in mind that each graduate should possess certain core competencies.   • Leadership Skills: Each graduate should be able to influence and convince patient and staff alike to work towards a common goal for efficient and effective execution of medical procedures and treatment.

  • Display Professionalism: Display of accountability and execution of standard nursing care as specified by the Indian Nursing Council, which includes but is not limited to regulatory, legal, ethical, humanistic, moral and altruistic fundamentals.

  • Patient-centric Approach: Graduates should be able to offer nursing care based on the personal preferences of the patient along with respecting their beliefs and needs in a compassionate and culturally appropriate as well as age-appropriate medical care, which is safe and effective at the same time.

  • Collaborative and Team-Oriented Attitude: Must possess the ability to work under different nursing and inter-disciplinary teams, with skills to carry out open communication, mutual understanding and respect along with mutual decision-making, while also facilitating learning and development of the team.

  • Evidence-Based Nursing and Thinking: A key element in every nurse should be an evidence-based nursing practice and thinking, promoting a patient-centric and effective medical care.

  • Impeccable Communication Skills: Inherit communication skills that facilitate effective and efficient nursing practice to patients, communicating the necessary information with patients, families and colleagues. Nurses should also inculcate a mutual understanding and respect of the healthcare decisions and patient needs for stress-free treatment processes.

  • Ensure Safety: Another key trait a nurse should inherit is the need for ensuring the safety of the patients and colleagues alike through effective execution of system functions and along with their professional performance.

These are some of the qualities and characteristics that a B.Sc Nursing graduate should inherit at the end of their 4-year basic nursing programme at the UG level.
