DTU ranks an individual's performance on the basis of grades ranging from grade ‘O’ to ‘F’, where O stands for outstanding performance and F stands for fail/ poor performance. Check out the detailed DTU grading system here!
DTU Grading System

DTU grading system uses a method in which the students' CGPAs are converted into grades to rank their academic performance over an academic year. The letter grades range from O, which stands for outstanding performance, to F, which means that the student has failed or has performed poorly in the entire academic year.

Read the article given below to get complete insight into the DTU grading system along with other essential details.

DTU Grading System Overview

DTU or Delhi Technological University has adopted a grading system under which students are evaluated for their academic performance in a course through practicals, tutorials, homework, assignments, term papers, design, studio, work, fieldwork or industrial training, seminars, quizzes, such as CWS, MTE, ETE/ EME, PRS/ STS and PRE/ STE etc as specified in the scheme of teaching and examination followed by the university. The marks in each of these components are then taken into consideration in order to compute the CGPA of a individual, which is later converted into a letter grade.

The academic performance of a student is graded on a 10 point scale. All component-wise evaluations will be done in the form of marks for awarding grades in a course. The marks for different components will be reduced to the relative weights of each component as per the scheme of teaching. The marks obtained will be out of hundred and the same shall be converted into grades.

Further, the mean (x) and standard deviation (σ) of the marks obtained by the students in a course will then be calculated and used to convert the marks obtained (m) by a student into grades.

To understand the structure of the DTU grading system, individuals can refer to the table given below.

Letter Grade

Numerical Grade

Formula

Computation of Grade Cut Off

O (Outstanding)

10

m ≥ x +1.5 σ

The value of x+1.5 σ to be taken into consideration for grade computation. The grade cutoff will be x+1.5 σ or 91% whichever is lower

A+ (Excellent)

9

x + 1.0 σ ≤ m <x + 1.5 σ

The value of x+1.0 σ will be taken into account for grade computation. The grade cutoff will be x+1.0 σ or 82% whichever is lower

A (Very Good)

8

x+0.5 σ ≤ m<x+1.0 σ

The value of x+0.5 σ will be taken into account for grade computation. The great cutoff will be x+0.5 σ 73% whichever is lower

B+ (Good)

7

x + 0.0 σ≤ m <x+ 0.5 σ

The value of x+0.0 σ will be taken into account for grade computation. The great cutoff will be x+0.0 σ 64% whichever is lower

B (Above Average)

6

x -0.5 σ ≤ m<x+0.0 σ

The value of x+0.5 σ will be taken into account for grade computation. The great cutoff will be x+0.5 σ 55% whichever is lower

C (Average)

5

x -1.0 σ ≤ m <x -0.5 σ

The value of x-1.0 σ will be taken into account for grade computation. The great cutoff will be x-1.0 σ 46% whichever is lower

P (Passed)

4

35 ≤ m <x –1.0 σ

The lower grade cutoff will be 35%

F (Fail)

0

m < 35

Less than 35%

Note: In subjects where the total number of students is upto 30, the result in grades will be prepared on the basis of actual performance of the students in the percentage scale and not on the basis of formula approved for calculating grades adopted by DTU grading system.

General Guidelines for Awarding Grades at DTU

DTU has set some parameters for awarding grades to its students. The general guidelines of the same are as follows:

  • All the assessments of different components of a course will be given in the form of marks for each student. Further, the marks will have to be reduced to approve weights as per scheme of examination and added up to get total marks secured on a grade point scale of 100. The rounding off will be done only once for each individual that too on the higher side.
  • The method provided above will be used for awarding grades to the individuals whether without marginal adjustment for natural cutoffs.
  • Further, the provisional grades awarded to students will be awarded by the Coordination Committee of the course consisting of teachers involved in that course. The grades so awarded will be regulated by the grade moderation committee of each department/ school.
  • For a student to be awarded a passing grade, they need to appear in the end term examination.

F Grade:

  • F grade means poor performance or failing course. It is also given in case of poor attendance and an F grade secured in any course will remain permanently on the grade card. The weight of F grade will not be counted at the time of calculating CGPA, but at the time of SGPA.
  • Those who receive F grade in a core paper will have to repeat the course either in the subsequent summer semester or the subsequent semester when it is offered.
  • If a student has been given a F grade in an elective paper then they will have to reappear for the same course or any other course from the same category in the subsequent semester.
  • Lastly, if a student has been given a F grade in a major or minor project work, they have to repeat the course by submitting a new project by working full time on a project for a duration of four months.

I Grade:

  • An I grade refers to an incomplete grade which is rehired to be converted into a letter grade in order to rank students under DTU grading system.
  • If a student is absent during end term examination due to medical reasons or any other special circumstances, they will be awarded with an I grade to the COE through the course coordinator, informing that the student has not been disqualified due to low attendance.
  • The allotted I grade will then be converted into a letter grade and be submitted to the COE after the retest has been conducted and all the requirements of the course have been fulfilled.
  • The letter grades awarded to a students in all the courses will be converted into a performance index including the semester grade point average (SGPA) and further into cumulative grade point of average (CGPA), which will be calculated as follows:
  • After the end of the course, a student with a CGPA of 8.0 and above will be awarded with ‘first division with distinction’ and a student with a CGPA between 6.0 and 8.0 shall be awarded with ‘ first division’.

How is DTU CGPA Calculated?

To calculate CGPA in DTU, all the semester credits are added and divided by the total number of credits. CGPA stands for cumulative grade point average. Its emphasis upon an individual's academic performance throughout an academic year. The semester wise grade point is known as SGPA which stands for semester grade point average.

Under the DTU grading system, the CGPA obtained by a student is converted into a grade letter in order to rank the individual's performance.

DTU use the following formula to calculate the CGPA of a student:

CGPA = Some of all semester credits/ Total number of credits

DTU CGPA to Percentage Conversion

At the time of applying for jobs or at the time of admission to foreign universities, students need to convert their CGPA to percentage. DTU helps students to find the percentage equivalent to their CGPA by multiplying the CGPA with a conversion factor of 9.5.

Suppose a student has a CGPA of 7.5, now to know about their percentage, we will need to multiply it with the conversion factor as follows:

Percentage = CGPA X 9.5 = 7.5 X 9.5 = 71.25%

Therefore, the percentage of the student is 71.25% which according to DTU grading system is awarded with a B+ which stands for good performance.

DTU Grading System: Scrutiny of Grades, Tabulation and Declaration of Results

Under the DTU grading system, a student may apply for scrutiny of grades to the head of department of school within three days from the date of display of grades. The grade moderation committee and the course coordinator has to check the entry of the weights from different components of evaluation and their addition.

There result of scrutiny may lead either to a change in grade due to mistake in any of the aspects scrutinize by the committee or the grade will remain unchanged. Whatever would be the case, that would be intimidated to the COE within three days from the date of receiving the application in the department of school as per the academic calendar.

However, in exceptional circumstances, the grades of a student or a number of students may be scrutinized by a committee constituted by the Vice Chancellor. The COE has to organize the tabulation of grades and announcement of results, COE is in charge of records related to the examinations and results.
