IIT Bombay is one of the highly rated institutes of technology in India which has been set up with the motive of facilitating higher education, research, and training in various fields of science and technology. IIT Bombay offers Master of Technology (M.Tech) programmes in various disciplines. The aim of M.Tech programmes offered by IIT Bombay is equip the students with deep theoretical knowledge which will enable them to deal with practical complex problems of design and development in industrial areas. Admission to M.Tech courses in some of the disciplines offered at IIT Bombay is done on the basis of the scores obtained by the candidates in the GATE examination. IIT Bombay GATE Admission Dates 2024
IIT Bombay grants admission in M.Tech courses to the candidates registered through the GATE COAP portal with a valid GATE score and through IIT Bombay official website. These candidates must submit an online application through the GATE COAP portal and IIT Bombay seeking admission to IIT Bombay. For some disciplines in the M.Tech course, the admission process of IIT Bombay is different and the candidates must submit a separate application form. IIT Bombay M.Tech Admission Eligibility Criteria 2023
General Eligibility Criteria for M.Tech Courses:
Candidates aspiring to get M.Tech admission at IIT Bombay must have at least 60% of marks (55% for SC/ST) in B.E/ B.Tech/ B.Sc/ M.Sc/ MCA courses.
Apart from the minimum qualification, the candidates must have a valid GATE score. The candidates should also appear for the institute level written test and/or personal interview round if they are willing to take admission to TA/TAP/FA/RA/RAP/IS/PS/SW courses.
The candidates, who are pursuing final year, are also eligible to apply for the IIT Bombay M.Tech admission test.
If the candidates qualify the examination of associate members of the following institutes, are also eligible to appear:
- Institute of Engineers
- Institute of Chemical Engineers
- Indian Institutes of Metals
- Aeronautical Society of India
- Institute of Electronics & Telecommunication Engineers
Eligibility Criteria for IIT B.Tech Graduates
Candidates who have passed B. Tech courses from any IIT across the country with CGPA or CPI of 8.00 out of 10 are eligible to register for M.Tech courses offered by IIT Bombay.
These candidates are exempted from the GATE, and the selection of these candidates under the Teaching Assistantship/ Research Assistant category will be made through a separate written test or personal interview.
IIT Bombay M.Tech Admission Application Process 2023
IIT Bombay M.Tech aspirants must register on two websites for admission. The details regarding the IIT Bombay M.Tech application process is elaborated below: -
Registration for M.Tech Course through IIT Bombay Website: -
Candidates must visit the official website of IIT Bombay.
Click on the tab that indicates ‘Students’ and select the option ‘Prospective Students’.
The list of courses will be displayed towards the right side of the ‘Prospective Students’ tab and the candidates must click on M.Tech/ M.Tech-Ph.D option.
The link will direct the candidates to the official M.Tech admission portal of IIT Bombay.
Click on the ‘Online Application’/ ‘Submit Online Application’ link.
Fill all the details, select the course that matches your eligibility, and submit the application.
Now, pay the application fee of Rs. 300 (Rs. 150 for Women, Reserved Category and PH candidates).
Take the printout of the application form.
Registration for M.Tech Course through COAP Portal:
After the announcement of GATE results, the candidates who registered on the official website of IIT Bombay must also register on COAP (Common Offer Acceptance Portal) to make a decision on admission.
Through the COAP portal, the candidates can accept admission and download the offer letter.
IIT Bombay will declare the results of the written test and personal interview on the COAP portal.

M.Tech Admission Process for Teaching Assistantship Category: IIT Bombay will grant M.Tech admission under this category for the candidates with a valid GATE score and performance in the interview. Students enrolled in the M.Tech course under the Teaching Assistantship category will be paid Rs. 12,400 per month. Candidates getting admission under this category must perform the following tasks: -
Assist or work for laboratory, courses or any related academic/ administrative work for at least 8 hours per work. The designated academic unit will assign the work.
Assistantship of Rs. 12,400 will be paid on the basis of monthly attendance.
Candidates enrolled under this category will have to complete an M.Tech course in 2 years.
M.Tech Admission Process for Fellowship Award Category: The selection of candidates for admission to the M.Tech course under the Fellowship Category is based on GATE score and performance in interviews. The selected candidates will get fellowships from government agencies.
M.Tech Admission Process for Teaching Assistantship through Project Category: Under this category, the selection of candidates for admission to the M.Tech course will be based on GATE score and performance in the interview. Students enrolled under this category are eligible for Assistantships based on the following norms: -
The assistantship holders must work on a sponsored R&D project that is being carried out at IIT Bombay.
The students must also do their M.Tech dissertation work under the same faculty group in the respective area as the sponsored project.
The students must complete the M.Tech programme in two years.
M.Tech Admission Process for Research Assistantship Category: IIT Bombay will select the candidates for M.Tech admission under the Research Assistant category based on GATE score and performance in the interview. The students enrolled under this category are entitled to a Research Assistantship of Rs. 13,400 per month if they comply with the following norms: -
- The major responsibility of the Research Assistants is to look after the Undergraduate laboratories and assist in Research or Teaching to the extent of 20 hours per week.
- These students will have the option to complete the M.Tech course in three years.
M.Tech Admission Process for Research Assistantship through Project Category: The admission to M.Tech courses offered by IIT Bombay under this category will be based on a GATE score and an interview. Students enrolled in M.Tech course under this category will be considered for Research Assistantship supported under sponsored research project of IIT Bombay if they comply with the following norms: -
- These students must work in the assigned Sponsored R&D Project.
- The students must work at least 20 hours per week in the Sponsored R & D project.
- The students must do their dissertation or thesis in the same project area.
- These students will have the option to complete the M.Tech course in three years.
M.Tech Admission Process for Institute Staff Category: Admission to M.Tech courses under this category will be applicable only for the persons employed at IIT Bombay as Institute Staff. The selection of candidates for M.Tech admissions under this category will be based on GATE score or work experience (two years) and Interview. Candidates who secured M.Tech admission in this category are subject to the following norms: -
- The students will have an option to complete the M.Tech course in three years.
- Candidates with only one year of experience will be admitted under the Self Financed category and not the Institute Staff category.
M.Tech Admission Process for Sponsored Category: IIT Bombay enrols a limited number of candidates in the M.Tech course under the sponsored category. The selected sponsored candidates are based on a valid GATE score, Two years of professional work experience after the qualifying degree, a separate written test, and personal interview.
Candidates applying for the M.Tech course under this category must note that they should have full financial support from the respective sponsoring agency. They will be given an option to complete the M.Tech course in full-time (2 years) or part-time (3 years) mode depending on the nature of sponsorship. IIT Bombay will not provide any financial assistance to sponsored category candidates.
