Common Mistakes to Avoid During CLAT Preparation 2025

Let’s understand some of the common mistakes that law aspirants make every time while preparing for a big entrance exam like CLAT.

Not Knowing the Syllabus

Candidates are advised to go through the CLAT syllabus before starting their preparation so that they can understand all the important topics that need to be covered in the exam. People who are not aware of the syllabus may face certain difficulties as they don’t know which topics to focus on. Apart from that, candidates can also save some time by skipping the topics that are not part of the CLAT syllabus.

Not Starting Early

Most of the time students fail to finish their CLAT syllabus as they don’t start preparing early. While some are serious from the beginning, others tend to procrastinate until it’s too late for the examination. Law preparation involves a dedicated amount of time with a complete focus on the syllabus. Candidates have to prepare for Mathematics, Legal Studies, Current Affairs, etc which require deep study. The more you procrastinate, the more your preparation will pile up and it will be tough for you to complete everything before the exam.

Not Preparing a Timetable

It is very important to make a timetable for CLAT preparation. A timetable will help you to understand the amount of time that you will take to complete the syllabus so that you have enough time afterwards to revise. Be thorough with your preparation plan and dedicate enough time to each and every section of the exam. Try to stick to the routine and devote significant time to studying for CLAT on a daily basis.

Not Limiting Your Resources

Limit your resources from where you have planned to study otherwise you will end up reading the same thing but from different books. Before you start your preparation, pick up the best CLAT books and study materials that are easily available, go through the syllabus and decide the resources that you will need keeping in mind the exam pattern and syllabus.

Not understanding Concepts

Many CLAT aspirants think that they will ace the exam just by memorizing the formulas and shortcuts. But, there is more to it as they don’t understand that the best way to score good marks is by developing conceptual clarity. English, Mathematics, Current Affairs, and Legal and Logical Reasoning are not so difficult provided you have an understanding of the basic concepts. If you have doubts and want to speak to someone then ask your coaching teacher or seniors who have cracked CLAT and get your doubts cleared.

Not Devoting Enough Time to Important Topics

One of the major mistakes that candidates make is not devoting enough time to important topics. These topics comprise a good number of questions in the exam so students must be well versed with them to ensure a good score. The Current Affairs and General Knowledge section requires candidates to stay updated with all that is happening around them.

Not Spending Time on Revision

After completing your syllabus, go through the topics at regular intervals to remember them. The regular revision will save you from overburdening yourself at the last minute. Prepare notes to write down important formulas, news around you, some shortcuts, etc. Set a time in regular intervals to revise everything that you have studied so far. Start developing the habit of regular revision so that you have enough time before your exam and with a calm mind you are able to appear for CLAT.

Getting Demotivated

CLAT is a tough exam and preparing for the exam takes time, making aspirants demotivated after a certain point. Those who are facing problems in solving questions or understanding the concepts, without getting demotivated, try to focus on the next topic. You can read motivational books or listen to such speeches that will help you overcome the fear and get the confidence to clear CLAT 2025. You can also discuss your problems with your friends who are also preparing so that they can come up with a solution.

Not Working Hard Enough

Students tend to look for shortcuts and tricks to shorten their syllabus and prepare everything in less time. However, you must know that there are no shortcuts to success. Likewise, you cannot clear CLAT with shortcuts. You cannot crack CLAT unless you study smartly and work hard during your exam preparation.

Not Setting Targets

Setting a target for CLAT will help you complete the syllabus and concepts within a limited timeframe. Your time management and problem-solving skills will improve and you will have the ability to cope with stressful situations.

Spending More Time on Preferable Topics

Candidates tend to spend an excessive amount of time on their area of interest. Not only should they study the topics or sections of their choice but they must also focus on other topics. CLAT cutoff is based on the marks that candidates score in all five sections, English, Current Affairs, Legal Reasoning, Logical Reasoning and Quantitative Techniques. So, the best way to prepare for CLAT is to prepare all the topics and focus on solving sample papers.

Inconsistency in Preparation

Inconsistency in CLAT preparation may reduce your chances of getting a good rank in the CLAT exam and not getting into one of the top National Law Universities. Candidates have to be regular with their exam preparation. Stick to your timetable and face the challenges of not securing good marks at the beginning of your preparation. Focus on revision and improve your preparation by overcoming all the problems.

Poor Time Management

Poor time management during CLAT preparation can become a primary problem in the preparation level of a law aspirant. Students should not juggle with all the topics and books but do not give attention to the important topics. This problem arises when students are not able to manage their time correctly. If you do not have a proper study plan, you might stress at the last minute, leaving crucial topics unexplored and practice incomplete. Without enough practice and revision, you have a chance to get nervous during the exam, leading to underperformance. Effective time management ensures covering all topics thoroughly, practising adequately, and entering the exam hall with confidence, ready to tackle any challenge.

Not Solving Previous Question Papers

The purpose of the CLAT mock papers , previous years’ question papers and sample papers is to serve guidance to the CLAT aspirants. Solve at least one CLAT previous years’ question paper every day after you have completed your syllabus. Candidates who don’t have a habit of solving sample papers may face difficulty on the exam day while answering the questions. By solving CLAT sample papers , they will get an idea of their preparation level and the amount of time that they will need to solve each question. Solving the papers will also evaluate your strengths and weaknesses on various topics.

Not Evaluating Performance

Candidates cannot identify their mistakes or try to improve their preparation if they do not analyse their performance after solving every mock paper. Aspirants understand the number of attempts that they should make, the time they should invest in each question and the difficulty level of the exam by solving the papers. The crucial part of CLAT preparation is definitely solving the papers and evaluating your performance.
