National Law Universities (NLUs)
are among the most prestigious institutions for various
law courses
in India. Established in various states throughout India, NLUs offer undergraduate and postgraduate programs in law, along with research opportunities. These universities are known for their rigorous academic programs and excellent placements, attracting students from all over the country. NLUs' placements are highly sought after by law graduates in India, and for good reason. The universities' placement cells work tirelessly to connect students with top law firms, corporate houses, government agencies, and public interest organizations.
Every year, NLUs conduct a campus placement drive, where law firms and other organizations visit the universities to recruit students. The placement cells provide a platform for students to showcase their skills and knowledge to potential employers. NLUs' placement cells also organize pre-placement talks, where companies and law firms give presentations about their work, culture, and job opportunities.
The average salary package offered to NLU graduates in India is around INR 15-20 lakhs per annum, with some students getting job offers for even higher salaries. Top law firms such as Amarchand Mangaldas, Luthra & Luthra, Trilegal, and Khaitan & Co., regularly recruit from NLUs. In addition, NLUs' graduates are also sought after by top companies such as Google, Amazon, and Meta for their legal expertise.
NLUs also have a strong track record of producing successful entrepreneurs and social activists. Graduates have gone on to start their own law firms, consultancies, and advocacy groups, working towards social justice and change.

NLU Placement Process 2023
The National Law Universities typically hold their placements in April or May of each year. On the basis of a candidate's academic background and legal acumen, recruiters who visit law school campuses shortlist them for various job opportunities. The entire campus placement procedure is overseen by a separate "Placement Bureau" or "Recruitment Committee" at each NLU. At NLUs, the hiring and placement process entails:
Pre-Placement Talks
Candidates who are interested to take admission in one of the NLUs of their choice participate in the program in order to know about the profile of recruiting company, career prospects, salary packages, etc.
Pre-Interview Screening Process
Below mentioned are the steps involved in the pre-interview screening process:
- Candidates take participation in the pre-interview group discussions.
- Recruiters look for the correct candidates as per their policy.
- Selected candidates are then supposed to forward their curriculum vitae to the recruiters.
Placement Offers
- All the selected candidates are called for an interview process
- Candidates who qualify the interview round are provided with placement offers.
- It is up to the candidate to accept or reject the placement offer made by recruiters.
- If a candidate accepts the offer, HR from the chosen company will contact the candidate for all the joining and onboarding formalities.
Candidates should be aware that the most crucial need is to perform well on the semester exams in order to boost their chances of admission. NLU placements fall into two main categories:
1. Zero-day NLU Placements
The fourth year of the LLB degree is when the crucial zero-day internship takes place. This is because no jobs are available at any of the major corporations or other firms. This is also known as a pre-placement offer because candidates have not finished college.
2. NLU Placements from Earlier Years
Students who have not been appointed to a zero-day internship or for any other reasons are not participating may take part in the placement from the previous year.

The placements offered by NLUs to their students during or before their final year are documented in the NLU placements report. The information on NLU placements from previous years is mentioned in the table below:
