Importance of Optics in JEE Main 2025

Optics can be defined as the magic of light and how it interacts with the world. Optics refers to the part of Physics which deals with the behaviour of light and how it travels. It helps to understand how one sees things, how lenses work, and how rainbow formations take place. Optics can be visualized as the science of understanding light and its tricks, like a magician revealing the secrets behind the illusions. In the studies for the JEE Main exam, optics is an important topic that helps candidates see the world through the eyes of science. The JEE Main 2025 Physics syllabus covers a wide range of topics in optics, comprising:

  • Ray Optics: Ray optics refers to a geometrical approach to understanding the propagation of light. The concept is based on the principle that light travels in straight lines and that it can be reflected and refracted at interfaces between different materials.
  • Wave Optics: Wave optics refers to a physical approach of understanding the propagation of light. It is based on the principle that light is a wave and that it can interfere and diffract.
  • Modern Optics: Modern optics is a branch of optics which deals with the interaction of light with matter at the atomic and subatomic levels. It comprises topics such as lasers, fibre optics, and holography

Type of Optics Questions in JEE Main 2025

Optics is a key concept in Physics and appears regularly in the JEE Main exam, in a variety of forms.

  • Optics questions frequently asked in JEE Main are numerical questions involving the direct application of formulas.
  • JEE Main optics questions can also assess one’s understanding of basic optical principles and theorems, often without requiring detailed calculations.
  • Some JEE Main optics questions can ask for an analysis of graphical relationships or qualitative interpretations of optical phenomena
  • Certain JEE Main optics questions are asked related to practical applications of optics in instruments such as microscopes, telescopes, and cameras.
  • JEE Main Wave optics questions often deal with interference, diffraction, and polarization phenomena.
  • Some JEE Main optic questions deal with combinations of lenses or mirrors in series involving calculations of the resultant focal length, image formation, or magnification.
  • Certain JEE Main optics questions deal with critical angles, total internal reflection, and their application in optical fibres.

How to Prepare for Optics in JEE Main 2025?

Optics involves a variety of exclusive terminologies and formulas, and there is a very wide range of questions which can be asked from this chapter in the JEE Main 2025 exam. Hence it is crucial for the candidates to study topic-wise and practice questions as per the same pattern. It would be helpful if candidates divide the Optics chapter into 3 sections, first reflection from mirrors, second refraction through the sphere, lenses, slabs and prism and third optical instruments. Initially, candidates should begin with questions which are relevant to a particular section, then after practising a good number of questions, they should try solving questions which involve a mixed concept. Candidates must undertake mock tests whenever they are confident over a section. The candidates need to memorize the formulas because many times they will get direct questions which will involve a formula. Candidates can check out some of the tips for the JEE Main optics section as mentioned below.

  • Candidates must keep in mind the sign convention while attempting questions for mirror or lens problem.
  • Candidates should memorize the formula after completely understanding the concept, otherwise, they will often get confused as to which formula works for which problem.
  • For problems involving multiple optical surfaces, candidates must always solve unidirectionally, and calculate required values for the previous surface before moving to the next surface.
  • NCERT books have some very good examples of optics, which candidates must read cautiously
  • While practising questions, candidates must always write what quantities are provided in the question and what they have to find.

Dear Student,

Agar aap ka GATE score 530 hain, to NIT Durgapur, IIIT Bihar aur IITDM Kurnool mein Data Science & Artificial Intelligence course ke liye admission mil sakta hain. Agar aap OPEN Category se belong karte hain, toh NIT Durgapur mein aap ko shayad admission na mile, but OBC-NCL/ EWS ategory mein admission mil sakti hain. Aap doosre NIT colleges accepting GATE score 500-600 bhi check kar sakte hain. Unfortunately, GATE score 530 pe aap ko kisi bhi IIT mein admission nahi milegi.

We hope this answers your query. Good luck!
