VTU grading system is based upon absolute grading system wherein grades are converted into marks and results are declared with SGPA and CGPA. Find all the important details regarding VTU grading system here.
VTU Grading System

The Visvesvaraya Technological University or VTU grading system includes Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) under which students who score more than 90% will get a grade point of 10 with an ‘O’ grade. Similarly, a score ranging between 90-80% will get an ‘S’ grade with a 9-grade point.

It is crucial for all the aspirants who are planning to pursue courses from this university or have appeared for the semester or annual examination to understand the VTU grading system to get clarity about their grades, evaluate their performance and also know about the steps to calculate their grades after the results have been announced.

Read the article given below to get deep insight into the VTU grading system and other crucial details.

VTU Grading System 2024

VTU grading system 2024 is on the basis of absolute grading wherein the marks obtained by the individuals are converted into grades at the time of result announcement and the grades are then released as SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) and CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average).

The highest letter grade is ‘O’ which stands for outstanding. Individuals scoring less than 40% will be given an ‘F’ grade which is considered as failed and they have to appear for re-examination. After qualifying the retest, candidates will be given an ‘E’ grade regardless of marks obtained in the retest.

Students can refer to the table given below to understand which score gets which grade and grade point to understand the entire VTU grading system.

This grading system has been adopted by Visvesvaraya Technological University to evaluate a student's complete academic performance. Earlier in the Indian education system, colleges and universities used to follow the percentage system for providing grades to the students. However, to make the process easier, a significant transition from percentage system to grading system was adopted for both undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Under this system, individuals were also given an advantage of Choice Based Credit System, wherein they get a chance to study elective subjects of their choice alongwith the core subjects.

What is SGPA?

SGPA, or Semester Grade Point Average, is a standardized method of evaluating a student's average score achieved in a semester by dividing the total points earned by the corresponding credit hours they have attended. In some universities, SGPA is also known as GPA or Grade Point Average or Grade Point.

What is CGPA?

CGPA, or Cumulative Grade Point Average, provides an insight into a student‘s overall performance throughout an academic year. For CGPA, the GPA of each semester is calculated and is divided by the total number of credits.

Both SGPA and CGPA are of numerical values which are then converted into grades.

Choice Based Credit System (CBCS)

Individuals can refer to the table given below to understand how the CBCS system works under the VTU grading system.

Tie-Breaking Policy:

In case of a tie, the VTU grading system has the following tie-breaker policy:

  • The student who has achieved a higher SGPA maximum number of times will be considered higher.
  • If the tie still persists, then the number of times a student has obtained higher grades such as O, S, A, B etc will be taken into account for the ranking purpose.

How is VTU CGPA Calculated?

Several public universities in India follow a similar pattern according to the recent 2015 recommendations under which most of the universities have shifted towards CBCS system and have changed their grading pattern from a percentage system to a CGPA system.

Similarly, VTU (Visvesvaraya Technological University) also calculates the CGPA for its students on the basis of several components which are as follows:

  • Marks secured by candidate in the final semester university examination
  • Total marks obtained (final semester university examination marks)
  • Marks obtained for internal assessment (for each course)

The formula using which VTU calculates CGPA for its students includes adding all SGPAs of all semesters and dividing them by total number of semesters of sessions.

Total SGPAs/ Total Number of Semesters= CGPA

VTU CGPA to Percentage Conversion

At times, candidates might also need to convert their CGPA obtained to percentage for various reasons, such as at the time of taking admission in foreign universities or at the time of applying for jobs.

In order to convert your CGPA into percentage, you will have to multiply the CGPA by a conversion factor which is usually taken as 9.5 on a scale of 10 point CGPA.

You can use the conversion factor as follows:

  • Multiply your CGPA by 9.5
  • The result obtained will represent, represent your CGPA’s percentage equivalent

For example, a student holds a CGPA of 8.0 on a 10- point scale then to take out his or her percentage:

8.0 x 9.5 = 76%

Therefore, the student's CGPA equivalent in percentage is approximately 76% which in accordance with VTU grading system falls between the percentage range of 70-80 and is awarded with Grade ‘A’ or Grade Point ‘8’.

VTU Grading System 2024: Promotion Criteria

VTU grading system 2024 has its own promotion criteria under which the promotion from an odd semester to an even semester is possible as long as the individuals meet the attendance requirement. However, for promotion from an even semester to the next odd semester (i.e. next academic year) the following requirements have to be fulfilled.

  • Students must not fail in more than four heads of passing in the immediate preceding two semesters.
  • Students must have qualified all the subjects of all lower semester examinations (both theory and practical subjects are considered as heads of passing).

Illustration:

To be eligible for the third semester, students have to ensure that they do not fail in more than four heads of passing in both the first and second semesters.

However, to be eligible for the fifth semester (next academic year) they have to ensure that they qualify all subjects in the first and second semesters and must also not have failed in more than four heads of passing in third and fourth semesters combined.

Similarly to be eligible for the seventh semester, candidates must have passed all subjects in the fourth semester and must have not failed in more than four heads of passing in the fifth and sixth semesters combined.

VTU Grading System 2024: Attendance Requirement

VTU grading system 2024 takes into account an individual’s attendance as well for which every semester is taken as a separate unit and students are required to maintain a minimum of 85% of attendance in each course. VTU periodically informs individuals about their attendance status, enabling them to address any shortage accordingly.

The attendance is calculated based upon the number of hours as specified in the university’s calendar for events. For students of the first semester, the attendance is counted from the date of admission to the course, as per the Common Entrance Test (CET) allotment.

However, a condonation of upto 10% of the attendance can be granted by the Vice Chancellor, on specific recommendation of the College Principal. Condonation can be granted on the basis of valid reasons only which include medical grounds, participation in university level sports, seminars, workshops, cultural activities, paper presentations etc.

With each semester ending, the College Principal has to submit a list of students who have been detained due to shortage of attendance to the Registrar (Evaluation) with a copy to the Registrar. Students must also be aware that as per VTU grading system, failure to inform students about the attendance shortage does not entitle them to appear for examinations.

Students with attendance shortages in one or more subjects have to repeat the entire semester as they will not be allowed to proceed with the next higher semester. In such a situation, students must seek re-admission to the same semester in the subsequent academic year.

VTU Grading System 2024: Internal Assessment Marks

Students must also be aware of the important information regarding internal assessment marks as per VTU grading system 2024. For internal assessment, each theory or practical paper has been allocated with a maximum of 20 marks. The marks for seminars are out of 50.

In theoretical papers, the internal assessment marks are based on two tests conducted at the time of the sixth and twelfth week of each semester. The marks for theory papers are determined by calculating the average of the higher marks obtained from any two tests.

For instance, if a student is absent from internal assessment tests, then the internal assessment marks for that subject will be marked as ‘AB’ or absent in the marksheet which will then be submitted to the university.

Further, the internal assessment marks for computer aided engineering/ drawing in the first year are divided as follows:

  • A total of 12 marks for class work and 8 marks for a test in the similar pattern as the main exam.
  • For other drawings offered by several branches, internal assessment marks will be evaluated based on sheets and one test in the ratio 60:40.

In the final and last year, the internal assessment marks for seminars and projects will be recognised by a committee which will include the head of the concerned department as well as two senior faculty members, including the project/ seminar guide.

In order to qualify the internal assessment, the minimum marks required by the students are as follows. There are no minimum marks for internal assessment of theory subjects.

  • A student must obtain a minimum of 50% marks in internal assessment in practical/ internship/ project work etc to be eligible for the corresponding university examination.
  • For seminars, students need to have a minimum of 40% of the maximum internal asset marks in accordance with the VTU grading system 2024.
  • All those students who will not be able to meet the minimum internal assessment marks requirements have to repeat the practical/ internship/ project work etc In subsequent semesters until they achieve the prescribed minimum marks.
