Despite the efforts being taken by higher learning institutes and UGC to curb ragging, there are still a few students who have been indulging in ragging. A total number of 22 students from Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur indulged in ragging the fellow junior students. The authorities of IIT Kanpur have considered the issue and suspended 16 students for three years while 6 students for one year.
IIT Kanpur’s Senate had taken the decision to suspend the students on October 9, 2017. The authorities received complaints from the students that a few third-year students made juniors strip and do some objectionable acts with each other. The ragging scene was recorded on mobile phones and circulated on social media groups.

Deputy Director of IIT Kanpur, Dr. Mahindra Agarwal revealed that 16 students have been debarred for three years since the charges levied against them were extremely serious. These students will not get any chance to appeal to the authorities until the completion of the suspension period. After the suspension period, these students will be allowed to take admission again.
The higher authority of IIT Kanpur has also dismissed the president and officer bearers from their respective posts at the student gymkhana who ignored the complaints of students about ragging.

Over 30 junior students approached the Dean of Student Affairs to file a complaint against 50 senior students on August 20, 2017. In their complaint, the junior students stated that they were abused, trashed and forced to inhuman acts by the senior students. Later, the dean forwarded the complaint to the anti-ragging committee for an inquiry and recommendation of punishment.
After the thorough inquiry, the anti-ragging committee found the involvement of 24 senior students. The committee recommended termination of 22 students from the course and also register a police complaint against them.
