In the recent QS World University Rakings 2015, Anna University has been ranked second in India after IIT Delhi in terms of research paper citations and next to IIT Guwahati in overall performance in mechanical engineering.
The rankings is based on several indicators from more than 800 top universities in the world.
Among Indian institutions, Anna University ranked in top 10 with a score of 80.7 next to IIT Delhi (82). The university has also left behind IIT Madras in the latest reports.
The university is funded by the State, Department of Science and technology (DST), University Grants Commission (UGC), Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), and some domestic companies, including Ashok Leyland and TVS.
On subject-wise ranking, the university stood next to IIT Guwahati, IIT Roorkee in mechanical, aeronautical and manufacturing engineering.
L Karunamoorthy, chairman, Mechanical Engineering Department, said to media, ”with 90 per cent teachers having PhDs, the strong exchange of research ideas between foreign universities through MoUs has helped raise the reputation considered for the report”.
The students are provided with advanced training through lab facilities which are available for almost all the subjects. While IITs dominated the list, AU and the University of Delhi offering degrees to a larger number of students managed to reach the top 10. No private university got a spot in the top 10.
Considering all the universities in the world, AU stood 293rd among the world’s top universities.
