On January 24, 2018, Union HRD Minister , Mr. Prakash Javadekar released the Model Curriculum for UG and PG in Engineering & Technology and Management (both MBA and PGDM). AICTE organised a one-day conference on ‘Quality Initiatives in Technical Education’. During the conference, the new curriculum was released.

Addressing the gathering at the conference, Mr. Javadekar expressed that the higher education scenario in India, particularly technical education, witnessed an exponential growth over the years. The progress in technical education is only possible by delivering the quality of education. For this purpose, AICTE has come up with a revised curriculum for engineering courses , he added.
Giving some details about the updated curriculum , Mr. Javadekar explained that the inclusion of compulsory internship , both social and industry, will help the engineering graduates connect with the need for society and industry at large.

New Changes in Engineering Curriculum: -
- From the upcoming academic year, engineering students will have to obtain 160 credits (earlier 220) for theory papers.
- Out of 160 credits, 14 credits will be applicable to the summer internship.
- For the first time, a concept on ‘ Virtual Laboratories ’ has been introduced in the new curriculum
- Three-week mandatory induction programme for first-year students will be conducted from the upcoming academic session.
- A maximum range of 150 to 160 credits is mandatory to get UG engineering degree .
- If the student completes an additional 20 credits, he/ she will be eligible for an additional minor engineering or UG engineering degree with Honours.
- The students could acquire these 20 credits through MOOCs (Massive Online and Open Courses).
- Postgraduate courses in engineering will have 68 credits.
Along with the model curriculum for engineering and management, AICTE also launched model curriculum of 18 PG specialisations.
