AICTE Announces Revised Eligibility Criteria for Admission to Management and Hotel Management Courses

In the Admission Process Handbook 2020-21, AICTE has defined the norms to be followed by approved institutions for setting the eligibility criteria and duration of various Diploma, Post Diploma, UG, PG, Lateral Entry, Integrated and Part-Time courses in Management and Hotel Management.

AICTE  Eligibility Criteria for Management and Hotel Management Courses

The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), in the ' Admission Process Handbook 2020-21 ', announced the norms for setting the eligibility criteria of various undergraduate and postgraduate programmes offered the Management and Hotel Management streams. The handbook also provides the norms for setting the duration and statutory reservation in the various courses.

The list of courses provided under these norms by AICTE is quite extensive and not only includes courses at the UG and PG level but also at the Diploma, Post Diploma levels. Norms for Integrated, Lateral Entry and Part-Time courses have also been provided in the handbook. The colleges offering management courses in India , and the colleges offering hotel management courses in India will be required to adhere to these norms when applying for renewal.

As per the data provided by AICTE, there are currently 10,935 approved technical institutions in India with a total approved intake of 3.27 million. In addition, 129 institutes are deemed to be universities and these have a total approved intake of 1.41 lakh. The total approved intake for the Hotel Management and Catering Technology course in India is just of 6,600 while that of Management courses is around 3.70 lakhs.

AICTE Eligibility Criteria for Hotel Management and Catering Technology Courses

The norms set by AICTE for setting the eligibility criteria and duration of hotel management courses in India can be found in the table below.

Full-Time Hotel Management Courses in India
Level Course Duration Eligibility
Diploma Hotel Management and Catering Technology 3 years (after 12th)

Candidate must have completed Class 12th (Standard XII / Intermediate / 10 + 2) from a recognized board with a minimum of 35% marks.

4 years (after 10th) Candidate must have completed Class 10th (Standard X / High School / SSC) from a recognized board with a minimum of 35% marks.
Post Diploma 18 months
OR
2 years
Candidate must have completed their Diploma examination with a minimum of 50% aggregate marks (45% in case of reserved category candidates)
Under Graduate BHMCT 4 years
  • Candidate must have completed Class 12th (Standard XII / Intermediate / 10 + 2 / HSC) from a recognized board of education

  • Candidate must have obtained a minimum of 45% aggregate marks (40% in case of reserved category candidates) in the qualifying exam.
Integrated Hotel Management and Catering Technology 5.5 years
Lateral Entry 3 years
  • Candidate must have completed a Diploma in Hotel Management and Catering Technolgy from a recognized institute.

  • Candidate must have obtained a minimum of 45% aggregate marks (40% in case of reserved category candidates) in the qualifying exam.

Post Graduate 2 years
  • Candidate must have passed a bachelor's degree course of 4 or more years in Hotel Management and Catering Technology / Hotel Management or an equivalent degree course.

  • Candidate must have obtained a minimum of 50% marks (45% in case of reserved category candidates) in the qualifying exam.

Part-Time Hotel Management Courses in India
Diploma Min. 1 or 2 Semesters more than Regular Course
  • Candidate must have passed Class 10th (Standard X / High School / SSC) + 2-year ITI course.

OR

  • Candidate must have cleared Class 10th + Have at least 2 years of full-time work experience in a relevant field.
Post Diploma
  • Candidate must have passed a Diploma course in the relevant field.

  • Candidate must have a minimum of 2 years of full-time work experience in a relevant field.

UG
PG
  • Candidate must have completed a degree course in the relevant discipline.
  • Candidate must have at least 2 years of full-time work experience in a relevant field.

  • Candidate must have completed a bachelor's degree course of minimum 3-years duration in any stream.
  • Candidate must have scored a minimum of 50% marks (45% for reserved category candidates) in the qualifying exam.

Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) Min. 21 months
Post Graduate Certificate in Management (PGCM) 1 - 2 years
Executive PGDM

15 months

18 months

  • Candidate must have completed a bachelor's degree course of at least 3 years duration in any stream.
  • Candidate must have obtained a minimum of 50% aggregate marks (45% in case of reserved category candidates) in the qualifying exam.

  • Candidate must have at least 5 years of work experience in a relevant managerial or supervisory position.

Integrated MBA 5 years
  • Candidate must have completed Class 12th (Standard XII / Intermediate / 10 + 2 / HSC) in any stream from a recognized board.
  • Candidate must have obtained a minimum of 45% marks in the qualifying exam.

Part-Time Management Courses in India
Post Graduate Diploma / Degree PGCM Min. 1 or 2 Semesters More than the Regular Course
  • Candidate must have completed a min. 3-year bachelor's degree course in any stream from a recognized college / university.
  • Candidate must have at least 2-years of full-time work experience in a relevant field.

PGDM
MBA
Executive PGDM
  • Candidate must have completed a degree course in a relevant discipline.
  • Candidate must have at least 2 years of full-time work experience in a relevant field.
