AICTE: Tech, Engineering Degrees Awarded by Professional Bodies till May 2013 Now Valid

AICTE has restored the recognition of professional bodies that grant engineering degrees. The degrees awarded by institutes like Institution of Engineers (India) to thousands of students will be valid till May 31, 2013, will now be considered valid across all fields including government jobs and higher education programmes.

The recognition of these institutes was withdrawn by the Ministry of Human Resource and Development (MHRD) five years ago due to alleged irregularities and complaints regarding the programmes offered by these institutions.

The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) restored the recognition as de-recognizing these institutes would have adversely affected the career of thousands of students. The decision was announced during a recent emergency meeting conducted by the AICTE.

According to a senior AICTE official, students who pursued technical education from such institutes with permanent recognition up to May 31, 2013, will be considered eligible for government jobs, post-graduation programmes, etc.

The move was initiated to ensure that the students who have pursued their technical education from these institutes do not suffer. De-recognizing these institutes would have deprived these students of getting government jobs, enrollment in programmes like M.Tech, etc.
