The state government of Andhra Pradesh has requested the central government to name AIIMS Andhra Pradesh after former Prime Minister of India, Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee . It was the idea of AP CM, Mr. Chandra Babu Naidu to name AIIMS AP located in Mangalagiri after the former PM. The government thought of proposing the same three years ago but did not take a final call on it. Now, the government feels that naming AIIMS Andhra Pradesh after Atal Bihari Vajpayee would be a fitting tribute in the memory of the great leader.
The permanent campus of AIIMS Andhra Pradesh is expected to be ready by 2020. The construction work of the permanent campus is underway at Mangalagiri.

AIIMS Andhra Pradesh has conducted the admission process for the academic session 2018-19. The premier medical institute will function from a temporary campus located at Siddhartha Medical College, Vijayawada. Almost, all the seats have been filled this year. The government is pushing the central government for the speedy construction of permanent campus without any fund crunches.
The foundation stone for AIIMS Andhra Pradesh was laid on December 23, 2015. The construction of permanent campus had been delayed due to the lack of funds. The government sent numerous representations to central government after which the construction works started in 2017, and are still underway.
