Finally, the Ministry of Human Resource and Development has finalized the shortlisted names for the post of Vice-Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University.

Finally, the Ministry of Human Resource and Development has finalized the shortlisted names for the post of Vice-Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University. HRD Ministry has sent the finalists' names to the President of India, Pranab Mukherjee for consideration. It is the responsibility of the President to select one among the finalists and extend an appointment.

According to sources, Principal of Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College and Hospital, Mr. Tariq Mansoor is one among the list. Chief Scholar and Executive Director of US-India Policy Institute, Mr. Abu Saleh Sharif, and CEO of Welcome Trust and DBT India Alliance, Mr. Shahid Jameel are the other two contenders.

The current Vice-Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University, Lt. Gen Zameeruddin Shah will retire on May 15, 2017. Therefore, the President of India will appoint a new VC by the second week of May. The supreme governing body of Aligarh Muslim University finalized the names and sent it to HRD Ministry.

The process for the appointment of Vice-Chancellor for Aligarh Muslim University started in February 2017. The Executive Council of the varsity selected five names for the appointment of VC and AMU’s Court, the supreme governing body shortlisted three names. The varsity received orders to appoint the VC who has the prescribed academic record. The current VC of Aligarh Muslim University does not have any academic experience.

Earlier, the appointment of Lt. Gen Zameeruddin Shah was challenged in Supreme Court, and the petitioners claimed that the current VC did not possess any prior academic experience, which is a must. However, the counsel representing AMU responded that UGC regulations are not binding on minority institutes.

Later, the Supreme Court refused to interfere in the appointment of new VC for AMU. The counsel representing AMU clarified that the all the five names suggested by Executive Council comply with UGC norms and all the five members have academic experience.
