A government-backed audit of Aligarh Muslim University has suggested that the varsity must abolish separate colleges for female and male UG students. Another suggestion made by the government to AMU includes replacing the admission quotas and merge the departments for Shia and Sunni studies.
The recommendations made by the government audit will help the 142-year-old university to divert from its past feudal culture and current obscurantist attitude. As per the government audit, the students of AMU must broaden their mental horizon and face the society with ‘blinkers off’.
AMU is one among the top 10 universities, which are being audited for their finance, research, academics and infrastructure. The UGC constituted five panels for this purpose on April 25, 2017. However, UGC has not disclosed any official reason for carrying out the audit. Some of these 10 universities have been in news for students protests against the autocratic administration. Pondicherry University and Allahabad University are also on the list of 10 universities.

The audit suggested that AMU must undergo wider reforms to end segregation on basis of gender and become secular. The audit also called for revamping the syllabi and educational pattern consciously in order to consider the need and background of students.
In a separate section titled ‘University Culture’, the audit stated that the varsity must encourage vocational courses for broadening the mental horizon of students, and enable them to contribute towards society. However, most of the vocational courses offered by varsity focus more on employability skills. The audit also suggested transforming AMU into Co-ed.

- AMU must conduct standardised national-level entrance tests for admissions.
- The varsity has to hike the fees to increase revenue and take up developmental activities.
- The Vice-Chancellor of AMU must be appointed through search-cum-selection panel instead of election.

- The varsity must abolish segregation on the basis of gender in different courses.
Responding to audit, an official spokesperson associated with AMU indicated that the varsity did not receive any correspondence or intimation in this regard.
