Centre for Environmental Planning and Technology (CEPT) University recently announced that Prof. Surya Kakani has been appointed as the Dean of Faculty of Architecture for a term of three years scheduled to start officially from 7th July 2017. However, his duties will begin immediately so that he can take over responsibilities from the outgoing dean Prof. Anne Feenstra in order to carry out a smooth handover of authority.

Prof. Kakani is a practicing architect based out of Ahmedabad since 23 years. He finished his diploma degree in architecture from School of Architecture in Vallabh Vidyanagar. He pursued his masters in the same field from the University of California in Los Angeles and has been a visiting lecturer at CEPT, NID and other colleges and institutes in India.
CEPT had appreciated his architecture practices as it focuses on problems concerning conservation of resources, keeping in mind sustainability and accuracy as a prime design challenge. He is known to have built several industrial units and institutions which are eco-friendly. He also once used the earthquake rubble for constructing walls in a school at Rajkot.
To initiate the search for CEPT's new Dean of Faculty of Architecture, a search and selection committee, comprising of Dr. Bimal Patel, Christopher Benninger, Vidyadhar Phatak and A Srivathsan was constituted to appoint the most suitable candidate.

Notable among his work includes the Anand Niketan School, SVK Public Library in Hyderabad, Vadi School in Rajkot, Madhu Industries Corporate and C.N. Vidyalaya Computer Center office factory, Hyderabad Metro commercial complex in Putlibowli and Care Institute of Medical Sciences (CIMS) at Ahmedabad.
