Banaras Hindu University’s (BHU) Arts and Social Sciences Faculties Turn Co-Ed

Banaras Hindu University’s (BHU) Arts and Social Sciences Faculties Turn Co-Ed

With an objective to counter the allegations of gender discrimination, Banaras Hindu University (BHU) has begun co-education in UG courses in the faculties of social sciences and arts from the current academic session. Faculty of Arts is one of the oldest departments in BHU. Earlier, BHU planned to implement co-education in these two faculties in 2015. However, the varsity was unable to do so due to practical difficulties. Now, these faculties have decided to allow girl students as per the instructions of VC of BHU, Prof. Girish Chandra Tripathi.

One of the professors revealed that Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences was one department until 1971. After that, the varsity created separate Faculty for Social Sciences. BHU’s founding father Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya established a separate Mahila Mahavidyalaya for the girls.

A few weeks ago, VC of BHU called a meeting and proposed the idea of implementing co-education in Arts and Social Sciences faculties. The idea had not revived any opposition and was passed unanimously. All other faculties/ departments of the varsity have co-education classes.

Currently, BHU has a constituent college for women, three constituent schools, four interdisciplinary centres, 140 departments, 14 faculties and 3 institutes. The varsity offers a wide range of courses in various streams. The medical college of BHU is equipped with all the modern amenities, and the hospital has 927 beds.

The varsity declared the first cut-off for UG courses recently and students from all parts of the country registered for various courses. This year, the varsity witnessed more applications from girl students. The varsity provides safe and secure hostel facility for girls. The new academic session is expected to begin in the first week of August 2017.
