For this, a proposal has been put forward to the Cabinet for doubling the strength of cadre of the Bihar Administrative Services (BAS). Recently an empowered committee of the finance department forwarded the proposal. Under the new proposal, there is a possibility of creating another 850 additional posts. Then the total strength of the sanctioned cadre would be 1701.
Present Statistics on the Administrative Strength:
- Sanctioned cadre strength in basic grade - 273
- Number of posts in the Deputy Secretary or equivalent ranks - 176
- Number of ADM or equivalent - 159
- Number of posts in the Joint Secretary rank - 131
- Number of Additional Secretary - 48
- Number of Special Secretary - 24
- Number of Secretary on Training (probation) - 40
But the cabinet is yet to approve the proposal and the official authority is yet to confirm the moves to strengthen the BAS. Sources said that state's middle tier of bureaucracy is said to be short of officers in ranks starting from Deputy Secretary to Additional Secretary. This is not for the first time the proposal came. The state government had previously planned to increase the strength of the civil service officers. The move will be welcomed by young civil service aspirants as it will give them an opportunity to serve the people of the state and also increase the possible chances of entering into the elite service. Besides that, it will also help the administration to work efficiently.

A Government official said that right now at this stage it is not possible to tell how many posts would be increased. It is only when the panel clears the proposal, there will be an idea as to how many posts would be created.
