The Cabinet Committee of External Affairs which is chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved the upgradation of 13 Government Medical Colleges. The initiative has taken under Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY).

The estimated budget for the upgradation of each college is Rs. 200 crore out of which Rs. 120 crores will be funded by the central government and Rs. 80 crore will be funded by the concerned state government. The total estimated cost for the upgradation of all the 13 institutes in Rs. 2,600 crore. The entire process will be completed by three years i.e. 36 months.

- GMC, Bhagalpur

The upgradation of these institutes will facilitate tertiary care facilities. These institutes will serve as composite centers for multi-skilling of health workers, professional education, treatment, and care. The upgradation also includes the building of super specialty blocks and trauma centres or any other necessary facilities. Under PMSSY, 58 colleges have been approved for upgradation and the works of 16 colleges have been completed.
