In order to help over two lakh students enrolled in distance learning courses of Calicut University, the School of Distance Education (SDE) – Calicut University has increased the number of study centres from 11 to 24. Through these study centres, the varsity will provide contact classes for students. On the other hand, the varsity has also doubled the number of exam centres for SDE examinations. With the increase in study and exam centres, the varsity can accommodate close to 2,100 students at a time.
SDE – Calicut has taken several measures to streamline the academic process and bring qualitative changes. With an aim to improve the quality of education, SDE has made contact classes mandatory for students enrolled in various UG and PG courses. The varsity is also providing online study material for SDE students which will help them to cover the syllabus in case of delay in distributing printed study materials.

The varsity has roped in teachers/ lectures from affiliated colleges to provide contact classes. As per UGC guidelines, it is mandatory to provide 10 hours of contact classes per paper for distance education students. SDE has also completed the recruitment process of 15 additional teaching staff to comply with UGC norms.
Calicut University will soon seek UGC approval for seven distance-learning courses. Students can complete private registration for these courses and these registrations will be transferred to SDE after the UGC approval.
