The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is expected to add a new subject, i.e., Health Sciences for Class 9 to 12 students. The Health Sciences subject for these classes covers basic knowledge pertaining to primary healthcare. Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Sciences) have jointly framed the syllabus for Health Sciences subject . The new subject will be added to the existing curriculum of class 9, 10, 11 & 12 soon.
Recently, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare had conducted a survey to check whether students have awareness of basic health relief/ healthcare and primary first aid . The survey figured out that many students did not know the basic treatment/first aid that has to be administered. For instance, many students lack knowledge on primary first aid that must be administered when a dog bites. Therefore, the ministry has decided to add a subject on health sciences to inculcate basic knowledge of primary healthcare in students.

The health sciences subject for Class 9 – 12 students will have topics on primary healthcare that must be administered when a person gets a heart attack all of a sudden, immediate relief necessary for some of the health hazards etc.
Due to the lack of primary knowledge on first aid, many patients are being brought to hospitals when they are critical. Therefore, it is becoming a challenging task for the doctors to save a patient’s life. Many lives can be saved if the basic first aid is administered. The introduction of health sciences subject for school students is a great initiative.
