Students of CBSE will now be taught Artificial Intelligence (AI) from class 8 onwards. AI will now be considered as a sixth subject (optional subject) from the next academic year for class 9 students. The new academic session will start on April 2019. AI is one of the few subjects that have been introduced in the CBSE programme along with yoga and Early Childhood Care Education (ECCE). The curriculum for CBSE AI elective will be prepared by IBM India. To begin with, IBM will conduct a pilot project in 1000 schools in Kolkata, Chennai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Bhubaneswar.
The pilot project of IBM will begin with creating awareness for school principals which will be followed by training of the teachers on the foundation skills of Artificial Intelligence (AI) .
Realizing the importance and potential of AI in the future resulted in the board deciding the inclusion of AI as a sixth subject. According to CBSE, this step will help the students be sensitised to the world of AI. The board has also decided that the schools begin teaching the 12-hour “Inspire Module” at Class 8 itself. Subjects like AI, yoga, and ECCE are skill subjects.
CBSE AI Curriculum Important Topics
CBSE AI Curriculum will include the following topics:
- Orientation on AI
- AI Ideation and Innovation Workshops
The curriculum will also include Capstone Project where students will be mentored by IBM experts for advanced prototype development. Top 40 students from 1000 schools across India will be selected for the Capstone Project.

CBSE is also offering the students of Class 10 to choose an optional subject which will be their sixth subject along with the 5 major subjects. This step has been taken to help those students who fail in any one of the three elective subjects. In such a case, the student has the option of using the sixth subject as and replace it in the calculation of the best 5 subjects.
Meanwhile, CBSE has also decided to introduce Health Sciences subject for class 9th-12th students . This will provide students with primary knowledge of first aid and basic treatment.

CBSE has requested the schools under its affiliation to give at least one option of a skill subject at the senior secondary level. This request has been given out in order to promote the students to try out the various avenues and receive skill-based information before they are exposed to the world. The board has also asked the schools to send them an application specifying the introduction of skill subjects that will be offered from the academic year of 2019-20.
CBSE Introduces Teacher's Handbook For Artificial Intelligence (AI) Subject
CBSE has introduced a teacher's handbook for Artifical Intelligence Subject. The Facilitator's handbook is for AI curriculum for students studying in class 8th and 9th covers a 112 hours curriculum. The handbook for the teachers is based on both technological and social skills. The handbook will guide on how to train teachers of class 6th to class 10th to teach topics related to AI.
The handbook also showcases AI-based tools which are used to AI across many disciplines. It also comes with a booklet which details 15 student projects from schools which were put on fast track mode by CBSE to study the impact of the curriculum

CBSE to Introduce AI in All Subjects
One of the biggest moves of the CBSE this year was introducing AI as an optional skill subject for class 9th with the curriculum introducing students to the three domains of AI which include data, computer vision, and natural language processing. CBSE is now planning to integrate AU with other subjects in all the classes.
Teacher's training in AI is all set to start in the coming month and handbook for the teachers has already been introduced.
