Centre Gives Nod for Exemption of Tamil Nadu Students from NEET 2017

The ongoing efforts made by the government of Tamil Nadu have finally turned out to be successful. The central government has agreed to give exemption from NEET to the state students. The state government had been struggling to get an exemption from NEET since February 2017. Agreeing to the demands of the state government, the centre indicated that the government of Tamil Nadu must promulgate an ordinance seeking exemption from NEET this year. Union Minister, Mr. Nirmala Sitharam revealed that the government of Tamil Nadu sought an exemption for the sake of rural students who were worried about getting admission in government medical colleges.

In Tamil Nadu, almost 90% students are enrolled under the state board. Qualifying the NEET examination was a difficult task for these students as the exam is based on the CBSE syllabus and not the state syllabus. Rural students who had emerged toppers in the state board examinations could not perform well in NEET. On the other hand, the implementation of NEET was an advantage only to the 10% CBSE students in the state.

Mr. Vijayabhaskar, Health Minister of Tamil Nadu will submit the ordinance to the centre seeking exemption from NEET for one year on August 14, 2017.

After promulgating the ordinance, the state government of Tamil Nadu can conduct medical and dental admission based on the score secured by the candidates in Class 12 examinations.

On August 3, 2017, the state government made its final effort regarding NEET exemption. The Health Minister of Tamil Nadu met Prime Minister of India and sought an exemption for this year.
