Students of the chemistry department of Lucknow University will now have access to better technological infrastructure with the first Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) lab along with other facilities inaugurated in the department on Wednesday .
The NMR lab is claimed to be the first among all universities in Uttar Pradesh. It will cater to the needs of research groups of other state universities too.
The NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance) lab will be a facility of the chemistry department, its principal job will be to provide access to NMR equipment and expertise for departmental research and teaching.
Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) is a physical phenomenon in which nuclei in a magnetic field absorb and re-emit electromagnetic radiation. This energy is at a specific resonance frequency which depends on the strength of the magnetic field and the magnetic properties of the isotope of the atoms; in practical applications, the frequency is similar to VHF and UHF television broadcasts (60–1000 MHz). NMR allows the observation of specific quantum mechanical magnetic properties of the atomic nucleus.
Many scientific techniques exploit NMR phenomena to study molecular physics, crystals, and non-crystalline materials through nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. NMR is also routinely used in advanced medical imaging techniques, such as in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
According to Sudha Jain, head of the Chemistry department, LUNMR spectroscopy is one of the most essential charaterization tools in chemistry and related fields used for determination of purity and confirmation of the structures of molecules .
Chemistry Department is the largest department of the science faculty of lucknow university with a strength of about 2500 Post Graduate and Under Graduate students, apart from about 85 research scholars.
