CUET 2023: With 2,65,248 candidates appearing for the Common University Entrance Test (CUET)-UG 2023, the university entrance test first day recorded 76 percent attendance, UGC chief M. Jagadesh Kumar said. The commencement of the examination took place on Sunday. The first phase of the CUET-UG is currently underway across 271 cities, with a staggering 447 centers, from 21st to 25th May. The examination is being conducted in three different shifts. In the initial shift, a total of 87,879 candidates were scheduled to appear. Moving on to the second shift, a notable count of 87,903 students took part. Lastly, the third shift, which spanned across 458 centers, witnessed an impressive participation of 89,466 students.
As per the statement of UGC chairman Professor M. Jagadesh Kumar, the initial day of CUET-UG witnessed a notable attendance of 76 percent, marking a significant increase compared to the previous year's approximately 62 percent.
In about 2 percent of the total centers (approximately 12 out of 450), the examination commenced later than the scheduled time but was successfully conducted. The delayed start of the exam in these centers was attributed to a few reasons, including power fluctuations at certain locations and the implementation of staggered entry for students at others, Professor Kumar further explained.

According to the UGC, students were instructed through their admit cards to enter the examination centers in a staggered manner. However, in a few centers, some students arrived late, leading to overcrowding and subsequent delays in starting the exam. To prevent such situations in the future, administrative measures have been implemented. Additionally, assistance from traffic police has been sought in many cities to minimize traffic congestion around the centers.
UGC chairman Professor M. Jagadesh Kumar also emphasized that basic amenities such as water, refreshments, covered shelters, and waiting areas for candidates and their parents or guardians have been provided. Regular updates regarding the exam status were communicated to the concerned candidates and their parents in centers where there were delays in starting the test.
