Numerous D.Ed candidates have staged a protest in Khammam (Telangana) on July 10, 2018, demanding the central government to withdraw its decision on making B.Ed graduates eligible for Secondary Grade Teacher (SGT) Posts (Primary Teacher Posts). SFI and PDSU supported the protests to seek justice for the Diploma in Elementary Education (D.Ed) holders.
Recently, NCTE issued an official gazette notification confirming that B.Ed graduates can apply for primary teaching posts in government and private schools. The notification further directed all the state governments to make B.Ed graduates eligible for SGT posts .
Even though the central government’s decision gives more scope for B.Ed graduates , the opportunities available for D.Ed holders will be minimised.

In two Telugu states, i.e., Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, the number of students pursuing D.Ed is higher than B.Ed. In Andhra Pradesh, at least 50% B.Ed seats are expected to remain vacant this year. The total number of B.Ed seats available in Andhra Pradesh is close to 35,000 and only 9,000 candidates appeared for the AP EDCET 2018 , a state-level B.Ed entrance exam.
In Andhra and Telangana, B.Ed graduates are eligible for SA (School Assistant) posts in government schools. The state governments conduct Teacher Recruitment Test (TRT) to fill up the vacant teaching posts.

Due to the revised notification of NCTE, the government of Andhra Pradesh has postponed the release of AP TRT Notification 2018. Since B.Ed candidates are eligible for SGT posts, the state government may conduct TET cum TRT for B.Ed graduates aspiring for SGT posts. In that case, the previous TET score of these candidates will not be taken into consideration.
