Delhi University: Lack of Clarity on B.A Economics Skill Enhancement Courses (SECs)

Students pursuing B.A. Economics at Delhi University who have entered the sixth semester of the course do not have any clarity on the syllabus or the name of their SEC (Skill Enhancement Course) . According to CBCS (Choice Based Credit System) of the University of Delhi, students will have to take SECs in the second and third year of the course.

In the previous semesters, students studied the SECs designed by DSE (Delhi School of Economics) . However, for the sixth semester, DSE has not designed SEC and told students to pick an SEC from some other subjects. The semester exams for the sixth semester will begin in either the last week of April or first week of May 2018.

An Economics lecturer at a DU College explained that the concept of majors is prevalent in CBCS. For these specialisations, SECs play a predominant role as it has 16 credits. During the last three semesters, students have studied courses on Research Methodology , Data Analysis and Budget designed by DSE. For the current semester (sixth semester), there is no clarity on SEC, he added.

A few teachers from DU colleges wrote to the HOD of DSE regarding SEC course for the sixth semester. In response, the DSE clarified that it could not design an SEC for VI semester. Colleges will have to design the SECs independently for the sixth semester. DSE further clarified that the same information was circulated to all the teachers last year.
