Delhi University is likely to transform into a hub of sporting excellence soon. The Ministry of Human Resources and Development is in the process of identifying 10 universities for this purpose. However, MHRD might take the final decision only after holding consultation with the University Grants Commission (UGC) and Department of Sports. Among the proposed 10 universities, Delhi University is one among them. However, there is no clarity whether the ministry will finalise DU or not, but the officials of DU are hoping to see the varsity as a sporting hub.
Director of DU Sports Council, Mr. Anil Kumar revealed that Delhi University is bestowed with all the facilities and infrastructure required to become a sports hub. On the other hand, students of DU excelled in sports and showed an exceptional performance in various national and international sports events. Students brought numerous laurels to the varsity in sports activities, he added.

In 2016, ten students of Delhi University took part in World University Shooting Championship, and six of them won medals. A total number of three students of DU also participated in Rio Olympics.
Mr. Anil was of the opinion that sports achievements do not add to qualifying of the varsity as a sports hub, and there are various other requirements that ensure universities to function as a hub for sporting excellence.
Mr. Dubey, Chairman of DU Sports Council indicated that students who show exceptional performance in sports might not do well in academics. These students need to attend practice sessions very often. Therefore, there is a need to bring a reform, i.e., ‘self-paced’ modes of study and these students shall be allowed to take examinations as per their schedule.

He further expressed that the government can bring a provision through which transfer of credits from sports to academic is possible. Students can get degrees in time if the government works on this provision and implements it.
Mr. Anil exhorted that the varsity must provide funding to the students who take part in various competitions. Currently, the varsity provides funding to the students who participate in World University games and championships.
