Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC) of Delhi University is all set to get its first woman principal. A professor from Faculty of Management, DU, Smirit Kaur has been selected for the post of principal at SRCC. The apex committee of the Delhi University approved the appointment on May 12, 2017. The former Principal of SRCC, Mr. P.C. Jain retired in 2014. Since 2014, the college has been functioning without a full-time principal.

Smirit Kaur was an alumnus of Lady Shri Ram College for Women . She completed her Master’s degree from Delhi School of Economics . Later, she completed her Ph.D. degree from Faculty of Management Studies or FMS . She has been working as a professor at FMS since 1989. Smirit Kaur has excellent experience in economic theory, macroeconomics and policy reforms. She also worked as a professor at Guru Gobind Singh College of Commerce.

The names of three candidates were shortlisted for the post of Principal of SRCC. The apex committee of the University of Delhi finalised on Smirit Kaur. The other two candidates were Mr. C.P. Gupta, Teacher at Department of Financial Studies (South Campus), and Mr. Anil Kumar, a teacher at SRCC.
The appointment of Smirit Kaur did not go well with the members of the Executive Council of the varsity. The members of the council claimed that the varsity did not follow the rules of the ordinance while shortlisting the candidates. According to the rules, the apex committee should have Vice-Chancellor, Pro VC, Chairperson of college’s Governing Body, visitor’s nominee and two members of Executive Council.
The members of Executive Council (EC) claimed that the apex committee did not consult theme before nominating the candidates.
