Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, current chairperson of Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore (IIM-B) & MD of Biocon Limited said that future jobs will be centred around automation and digital technology.

It is a widely known fact that times are changing. People are becoming more accustomed to digital technologies and automation and are highly dependent on the same to a large extent.

Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, current chairperson of Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore (IIM-B) and a biotech entrepreneur by profession recently stated that a variety of job opportunities will be centred around automation and digital technology in future.

She is of the opinion that e-commerce giants and new age businesses like Amazon, Airbnb, Flipkart, Uber, Ola etc. are creating millions of jobs that are several orders of magnitude higher than the comparative conventional jobs.

Stating facts and figures, she mentioned that taxi app companies such as Ola and Uber have already created jobs for about a million drivers who have an average monthly income of Rs. 75,000. The same requires less capital investment, therefore making the business model competitive and efficient.

Similarly, e-tailing has created a supply chain thereby adding a scope for more number of jobs.

Information Technology (IT) is one domain that is likely to experience a surge in automation software development jobs. Other sectors such as big data analytics, education, genomics, healthcare, travel etc. have not even scratched the surface yet. However, IT can be combined with these and further create jobs in future, she revealed.

Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw is the Chairman and Managing Director of Biocon Limited, a biotechnology company with its base in the city of Bangalore. Biocon is among the top 10 employers in the biotechnology industry in the world according to an international science magazine.

Shaw was also conferred with the highest French civil distinction - Chevalier de la Legion d’Honneur (Knight of the Legion of Honour) for her outstanding contribution and dedication towards biosciences and innovative research.
