This year, Panjab University secured 135 th position in the Emerging Economies University Rankings 2017. The rankings were given in association with Times Higher Education World. Last year, the varsity secured the 121 st rank. However, it slipped fourteen ranks this year.
The varsity secured poor rankings in Times Higher Education (THE) World Rankings too. Since two years, Panjab University has been struggling to improve the rankings, and due to the poor teacher-student ratio and international outlook, the varsity has been failing to improve in this context. If the University were provided with sufficient funds to develop infrastructure and recruit faculty members, it would have achieved a better rank.

However, as per BRICS rankings which were released on November 30, 2016, Panjab University secured the third place among the Indian universities. Jadavpur and Delhi University bagged first and second positions, but in the international outlook, the rankings are not up to the mark.
G.S. Chadha, Registrar of Panjab University, explained that the competition was very tough among the Indian universities. Premier institutes like Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore , Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are capable of achieving better rankings due to different criteria and parameters.

Earlier, the VC of the University expressed his concern that Panjab University would shut down by January if the centre does not provide funds. The Ministry of Human Resource and Development (MHRD) on the other hand assured that the varsity would be provided funds in two or three installments.
