DU’s Five-Year Journalism Course to Have Tamil as Optional Language

The five-year integrated Journalism course introduced by Delhi University will now have Tamil as an optional language. Tamil is one of the popular languages in South East Asian countries that include Malaysia and Singapore. Therefore, learning the Tamil language will help the students if they visit these countries. Besides Tamil, Bengali will also be made available to the interested students. The varsity currently offers various foreign languages that include Mandarin, French, Spanish and Arabic.

According to the official information, the varsity will not conduct any entrance examination for this course and the admissions will be purely based on merit. However, the admission process for integrated Journalism programme will not take place simultaneously with other programmes. The admission process differs a bit compared to other programmes. The Faculty of Social Sciences will host the programme and students will have the chance to quit the course only after three years with a B.A degree.

Prof. Maharaj K Pandit, Chairperson of Admission Committee revealed that the main aim of the course is to produce experts in specific areas of Journalism. The varsity has designed the course in such a way that it lays more emphasis on skill-based learning and practical approach. He further added that interested students will also get a chance to take up Business Journalism.

The course fee for five-year integrated Journalism is Rs. 30,000 per semester and the intake is 60. The course got approval from DU’s Standing Committee last week. However, the Academic Council and Executive Council of the varsity must approve the proposal.
