Magadh University (MU) has decided to make English as a compulsory language at the degree level. The decision has instigated a mixed response from the different sections of the stake holders in the university education.
While the academic community has welcomed the decision, some sections have responded with caution. The Magadh University Syndicate at a meeting held on 1st April approved the proposal to make English as a Compulsory language at degree level for all the students including the students who are pursuing Science & vocational education.
According to Nalin Kumar Shastri, a member of the MU Syndicate, the resolution on the English language would be implemented from the very next academic session beginning in July 2016. The decision was overdue, said Mr. Shastri.
The Syndicate also hoped that making English as a compulsory language at degree level would go a very long way in making Magadh University student’s job market-friendly as the communication skills would be the key to success in the job market. The familiarity with The English language would help the students widen their own horizon, said Mr. Shastri. The Syndicate member, who is also the Head of the PG Botany Department, said that more than anybody else, the Science students require English in order to abreast with the latest developments that are taking place in the respective fields of the study.
