One of the regional directors of Indira Gandhi National Open University, Dr. Donepudi Ramanjaneya Sarma revealed that the varsity has been offering six programmes to SC/ ST and backward class students free of cost.
Dr. Sarma also indicated that the varsity has been extending 50 percent fee waiver to students of rural areas who come under Below Poverty Line (BPL) category for the following agricultural programmes: -
- Diploma in Watershed Management
- Diploma in Value Added Projects of Fruits and Vegetables
- Diploma in Dairy Technology
The applications to these programmes will be provided free of cost for the candidates who come under BPL category.

Dr. Sarma is the Regional Director of IGNOU in Andhra Pradesh. Explaining about the special programme for Anganwadi workers, he pointed that most of the Anganwadi workers in the state are unable to pursue the course due to financial problems. Therefore, he requested the state government to support Anganwadi workers in taking up the course. The special programme for Anganwadi workers is beneficial for their profession.
With an objective to develop skills among the students in various fields, IGNOU has been offering various skill development programmes through distance mode. Interestingly, IGNOU is also offering a course for police personnel, i.e., Certificate course in Anti-Human Trafficking.

Dr. Sarma advised the rural students to utilise this opportunity and develop skills through various skill development programmes offered by the varsity.
The regional centre of IGNOU in Andhra Pradesh is located at KBN College, Vijayawada . The candidates can visit the regional centre for more information on various courses and admissions. Currently, the admissions are open for July 2017 session.
