- Women students in hostels urge VC to extend the timings of hostel and accessibility to the library.
- A detailed memorandum has been submitted to VC of BHU by women students explaining their grievances.
Over 400 women students from BHU (Banaras Hindu University) urged the Vice Chancellor of the varsity for relaxation of rules including changes in hostel timings and accessibility to the library for 24 hours among others. The students have stated their grievances in a letter and submitted to the VC of BHU. Women students are also not happy regarding the practice of interfering in one’s personal matters in the name of security. All these students are pursuing different courses in Girl’s Degree College affiliated to BHU. The same letter was addressed to hostel coordinator and Chief Proctor of the varsity.

Explaining their grievances through an official letter, the students urged the VC of BHU to allow women’s hostel remain open until 10:00 PM. Students further indicated that the hostels within the campus could remain open even though the main gate closes at 10:00 PM. The students are hoping for equality within the campus and pointed that the University Grants Commission did not permit discrimination in the name of security. The UGC guidelines also have a separate provision for an independent body against sexual harassment or abuse.

Students further notified the VC that the team that had enquired the recent incident of sexual harassment had informed the National Commission for Women that the curfew timings must be lifted and the library could be open for 24 hours. An official associated with BHU clarified that the authorities would take the views of opinions of all the girl students from the hostels and come up with new rules soon.
