Under the Spoken Tutorial programme, Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay offers IT course free of cost at the Nagpur University. However, the course has not been receiving a positive response from students as the authorities have failed to promote it enough publicly. If the Nagpur varsity and IIT Bombay had made efforts to create awareness among the students, then there would have been more takes for the IT course. Students who are studying in the affiliated colleges to Nagpur University can also utilize this opportunity.

IIT Bombay sought a report from Nagpur University on a number of colleges and students registered for IT course. The officials of the varsity also agreed that lack of proper publicity is the reason for the poor response. Last year, only 18 colleges registered for this programme to avail its benefits. This year, only 10,000 students registered for the same. Around 600 colleges are affiliated to Nagpur University with four lakh students pursuing various courses in its affiliated colleges. Dissatisfied with the response for the IT course, the varsity has issued circular to the heads of the departments and principals of various colleges to make required efforts to register a large number of students.
The IT oriented course offered by IIT Bombay is an e-learning course which offers a varied range of short term programmes including C languages, OS etc. Interestingly, soft skills’ training is also a part of the programme.

The principal of a college affiliated to Nagpur University mentioned that the varsity shall communicate essential information through e-mail. It is not possible to check the official website of Nagpur University each and every time.
It is time for the varsity to take necessary steps for uplifting the course and enrolling more students.
