Mumbai University’s IDOL (Institute of Distance and Open Learning), which is often regarded as one of the biggest sources of income for the varsity has received very few applications in 2017 for admission to various courses. According to an official data disclosed by the varsity officials, 67,930 applicants registered for different courses, and only 53,832 students are able to confirm their application.
In 2016, over one-lakh candidates registered for courses offered by IDOL. The number was 80,000 in 2015. Compared to the past two years, the number of students registered for IDOL courses at MU has dropped drastically. IDOL offers 35 courses in different disciplines.

An official associated with IDOL pointed that the varsity had extended the deadline twice. However, the number of registrations did not increase as per expectations of the varsity. He further indicated that the delay in announcing results had a negative impact on IDOL admissions this year.

Expecting more registrations soon, the IDOL has increased the deadline to register for IDOL courses until October 31, 2017. If possible, the varsity might further extend the deadline to November 15, 2017. The drop in a number of registrations will have a negative impact on the revenue of the varsity. The course fee received by the varsity will help IDOL to develop facilities and resources. Usually, the average income generated by IDOL of Mumbai University is Rs. 30 crores.
The fee structure for B.A courses offered by Mumbai University is Rs. 3,230, while the fee structure for B.Sc and IT course is Rs. 16,210.
