The number of GATE 2020 candidates has come down to 8.60 lakhs from the 9.27 lakh of the previous year. However, the conducting body of the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2020, the IIT Delhi had previously released a notification that they are expecting 1 million applications. Contrary to the expectations, the actual data showed that the current application numbers have dropped significantly. The decline in the numbers are being linked with the hike in the M.Tech fees in IITs n recent times.
This reason has been rejected by the GATE 2020 chairman, he says that the registration data of the last 10 years have ranged from 2.30 lakhs to 12 lakhs. 2018, 2017 and 2016 years have already seen much lower numbers in enrolments comparing to 2020 enrolments. These years had received 7.81, 7.87 and 8.18 lakh candidates, much lower than the 2019 statistics as well.
