Girl students from three hostels of Mumbai University opposed the decision of the varsity which denied access to the library after 11:00 PM. Girl students do not have access to the library 24/7 whereas male students do. The varsity denied access to the library to girl students after 11:00 PM due to security reasons.
The decision that was taken by the varsity has been opposed by girl students who protested with the help of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). The students demanded that the varsity shall form a committee to look into the issue and rollback the decision that was taken earlier. The decision was taken by Board of College and University Development (BCUD).

BCUD is a varsity body which plays a significant role in preparing and planning academic development programmes. A group of girl students had written a letter to Vice-Chancellor of varsity demanding access to Jawaharlal Nehru Library 24X7.
Earlier, BCUD also decided to provide a temporary reading room to each student with two books in the common mess area. The varsity assured that it would form a committee to look into students’ demand.

However, one of the girl students expressed that forming a committee itself is a discriminatory task. If the varsity is concerned about the security of girls, then it has to ensure the safety measures are taken in the right way.
Rohith Chandode, ABVP City Head, indicated that they would support the girls until the varsity takes steps to set up proper security measures for female students.
