Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Mr. Mukul Sangma announced that the state government would set up two engineering colleges in a campus located near Shillong Polytechnic premises in Tura and Malwa.
CM will lay the foundation stone for an engineering college at Malwa soon. On the other hand, the college of architecture and urban planning will soon come in Tura. The government is also in plans to set up Meghalaya Technical University. The CM further indicated that education is the top priority of the government. Engineering and Architecture institutes train the students in requisite skills and further improve the employability of students. Developing educational opportunities will further create employment opportunities in the state.

He further urged all the stakeholders to ensure that Meghalaya becomes a hub for education. He also pointed that teachers from neighbouring countries are visiting Meghalaya to learn the English language in reputed institutes located in Shillong.
The state government needs more support from the centre to establish a large number of higher learning institutes to improve the Gross Enrolment Ratio. Many students from Meghalaya are relying on varsities and colleges in other states for higher education. If the government sets up more institutes in Meghalaya, it would be highly beneficial for students to take up learning in their own state.

Subsequently, Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Shillong has been playing a significant role in delivering quality management education in the state. Recently, the premier management institute also announced setting up of Abdul Kalam Centre for Policy Research and Analysis. The centre will work towards designing development models.
