All set to bring reforms in the University Grants Commission (UGC), the government had set a review committee. Former Chairman of UGC Dr. Hari Gautam was the head of the committee that will evaluate the work of UGC. The report has been submitted by the committee and the UGC is working on making the reforms.

The UGC has been in the process of making some essential funding and regulatory reforms that will make it a more effective organization in terms of regulatory mechanisms.

Initiatives such as Impacting Global Initiative of Academic Networks (GIAN), Research, Innovation & Technology (IMPRINT), National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) and Uchchtar Avishkar Yojna (UAY) have been introduced by the central government to promote qualitative development in education and related fields. An objective criterion has been set in place to rank educational institutions that will be done under the NIRF. Ranking will be done based on the fields of education such as Medical, Engineering, Pharma, Management, Architecture, etc.

The Government has also collaborated with Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) to start the initiative IMPRINT that will address the major challenges that occur in engineering.

A roadmap has been finalized under this initiative that will help to deal with the challenges faced in engineering in ten technology domains that have a great social effect. The UAY scheme aims to promote innovation in IITs and tackle the problems faced in the manufacturing industries; to outgrow inventive mindset; to have a synchronization between academia & industry and to improve the quality of labs & research facilities.

The GIAN scheme is to provide smooth functioning between Higher Educational Institutions in India and other countries. The scheme also plans to bring in proficient international scientists and entrepreneurs.
