In a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the UP Govt and the Ministries of HRD and Health and Family Welfare, IMS BHU (Banaras Hindu University) is all set to be upgraded into a medical institute at the same stature of AIIMS with new medical facilities.
As per a senior official, the government recently agreed to a proposal that was to allow IMS BHU to upgrade their equipment and facilities. With a Rs. 616 crore investment needed by the Institute to upgrade, the government has agreed to provide financial support to them. This will further help the Institute to have more financial and functional autonomy as well as improve its governance.

Improving the medical facilities for those living in and around Varanasi is one of the many perks that will arise from this upgrade of IMS BHU into a super Speciality hospital. This step will also make IMS BHU one of the first super-speciality hospitals which will be under the governance of BHU Act, instead of the AIIMS act. The centre will invest in it for the year 2018-19 and 2019-20 for increasing the facilities that are needed to create a super-speciality hospital.

The aim of investing 616 Crore in IMS BHU was to bring the top medical facilities that you find in the AIIMS institutes in India . It was one of the promises that the Modi government had made in the previous polls of 2014.
With a mega expansion on its way for IMS BHU, it is expected that there will be more than 2000 staff that will be recruited or appointed, along with an entire division of teams in the various medical departments.
