One of the leading and prestigious universities of the country, Gujarat University is to organise three-day music festival to commemorate and celebrate legendary singer, Begum Akhtar. The University also plans to celebrate its own foundation day on the same day.
The much anticipated three three-day music festival will start from 23rd November 2016 at its convention hall with a plethora of activities. The University authorities have decided to hold the function in the memory of the legendary thumri and ghazal singer because of her close association with the city.

The three-day concert will be held under the title of 'Rooh-e-Ghazal Jashn-e-Begum Akhtar'. It is being organised by the Sangeet Natak Akademi, New Delhi in association with Ahmedabad-based Upasana Schol of Performing Arts, and Gujarat University.
Several prominent ghazal and thumri singers from across the country have been invited to perform at the 3-day festival. Some of the prominent ones are -
- Ashok Khosla from Indore
- Penas Masani from Mumbai
- Shobha Chaudhary from Indore
The students of Upasana will also get an opportunity to perform at the concert. They will perform along with various local artists that include Arti, Shyamal-Saumil Munshi and Gargi Vora from Rajkot.

It is to be noted that the Mallika-e-Ghazal- Begum Akhtar had performed her last programme in Ahmedabad in October 1974. While performing at her concert at the Town Hall in October 1974 her health had deteriorated. She was immediately rushed to the hospital where she breathed her last. Begum Akhtar died in the hands of her friend, Neelam Gamadia, who had invited her for the concert.
