The Ministry of Human Resource Development ( MHRD ) has launched an online professional development programme which will provide training to 1.5 million higher education faculty using the Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) platform SWAYAM . According to the HRD Ministry, around 75 National Resource Centres (NRCs) will prepare the online training material. The programme will mainly focus on latest developments in the education sector, emerging trends, technology and methodologies for transacting revised curriculum, etc.
The online programme will offer all in-service teachers with an opportunity to learn about latest developments in their field/subjects through the medium of a technology-based online refresher course. The online programme is very flexible and faculty can pursue the course at their own pace.

A varied number of institutions such as National Institutes for Technical Teachers Training (NITTTRs) , Open Universities, IITs , NITs , etc have been notified as NRCs . NRCs are working towards developing the Refresher Module by 15 June 2018. The training material will be available to the teachers through SWAYAM latest by 1 October itself. Depending on the response the refresher course can be repeated again in January. They will publish the list of certified faculty by 31st December 2018.

These NRCs will cover a wide range of subjects such as Sciences, Engineering, Social Sciences, Public Policy, Leadership, Education Planning and Administration, Leadership and Governance, Astronomy and Astrophysics, Library and Information Science, Nanosciences etc.
