HRD Ministry Likely to Consider 10 More Institutions for Eminence Status, UGC Seeks Clarity

HRD is planning to consider IIT Kharagpur,  IIT Madras, Delhi University, Jadavpur University (West Bengal) and Anna University (Chennai) for the eminence tag. The EEC (Empowered Expert Committee) also recommended HRD Ministry to increase IoE status to 30 institutes from 20.

The Human Resource Development (HRD)ministry is planning to consider five more public institutions for the eminence tag as per the recommendations made by the Empowered Expert Committee (EEC) for the Institute of Eminence (IoE) status. The EEC also recommended HRD Ministry to increase IoE status to 30 institutes from 20.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has sought clarification from the government whether to consider 10 more institutes for IoE status or not. As the government is yet to take a call on the same, the announcement of a fresh list of institutes eligible for IoE tag may be delayed.

According to the Empowered Expert Committee (EEC) headed by N Gopalaswami, Chief Election Commissioner said that they are planning to consider IIT Kharagpur , IIT Madras, Delhi University , Jadavpur University in West Bengal and Anna University in Chennai for the status. It is also important to know that the prestigious Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) was unable to make it to the list.

Meanwhile, the government will provide Rs. 1,000 crore funds to three public institutions in the next five years. However, the private institutions will not be eligible for the same. The EEC committee was supposed to select over 20 IoEs, 10 private and 10 public universities. But only six were selected that will get to enjoy complete administrative and academic autonomy.

Apart from this, institutes including IIM Ahmedabad , ISI Kolkata, TISS Mumbai, IIM Kolkata and Punjab Agricultural University have been recommended for the tag of special institutions by the committee.

According to the committee, these institutions have a great potential to achieve global prominence.
