HRD Ministry Directs UGC to Inspect 44 ‘Unworthy’ Universities Again

The Union Ministry of Human Resource and Development (HRD) Ministry has directed the University Grants Commission (UGC) to carry out a fresh inspection of 44 universities labelled ‘unworthy’ of being given a deemed university status. A government panel pointed that deemed university status of these 44 institutes is ‘unworthy’ in 2009. The deemed status of these varsities has been uncertain which is why some institutes are seeking legal action.

Now, the HRD Ministry has written to UGC to conduct a fresh inspection and figure out whether these universities can retain the deemed status or not.

Tandon Committee, a government panel constituted by HRD Ministry in 2009, had examined a total number of 126 deemed universities. The committee pointed that out of these 126 institutes, 44 were ‘unworthy’ to secure deemed university status. The performance of other 44 varsities was not satisfactory while 38 varsities had performed well. After the inspection, the panel recommended the immediate withdrawal of deemed status of the institutes that were found ‘unworthy’.

Tandon Committee assessed each institute for 45 marks. The institute that scored less than 15 marks were declared as ‘unworthy’ for deemed status. The 44 institutes that were not eligible have been struggling for deemed status since 2008.
