JMI’s proposal to award Doctorate degree to renowned Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan rejected by HRD Ministry as the actor had already received a Doctorate degree from a different university.
The Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) has rejected the proposal made by Jamia Millia Islamia to award Honorary Doctorate to Bollywood Actor, Shah Rukh Khan . According to the official information disclosed under RTI, Shah Rukh Khan has already received a Doctorate degree from a different university. Surprisingly, Shah Rukh Khan is an alumnus of Jamia Millia Islamia.
According to sources, Shah Rukh Khan gave his consent for the proposal made by JMI for awarding Doctorate degree to him. Later, the proposal was sent to the HRD Ministry for final approval. However, the ministry turned down the proposal as the actor had already received a Doctorate degree from a different university.
In 2016, Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU) conferred Doctorate to Shah Rukh Khan. Therefore, the renowned Bollywood actor is not eligible to receive Doctorate from a different university. There are no fixed rules for awarding doctorate degrees multiple times, but the ministry is not in favour of awarding multiple doctorate degrees.
Shah Rukh Khan was a Master’s students of Jamia Millia Islamia’s Mass Communication Research Centre. However, he did not appear for final-year exams due to the shortage of attendance.

Many universities in India confer Honorary Doctorate degrees to people in renowned fields such as acting, music etc. Recently, Tamil University awarded Doctor of Letters (Doctorate) to popular Tamil music composer, GV Prakash Kumar. Surprisingly, the music composer received Doctorate for the second time. On the other hand, the HRD Ministry rejected awarding the second Doctorate to Shah Rukh Khan.
