Anita Karwal, IAS officer assumed charge as the new Chairman of Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). Prior to her appointment, Ms. Karwal was posted as an Additional Secretary in HRD Ministry. She has also served as the Chief Electoral Officer in Gujarat during 2014 Lok Sabha elections.
She has replaced former Chairperson of CBSE, Mr. R.K Chaturvedi who has been transferred to National Skill Development Agency. He served CBSE for more than a year. His term was arked with various controversies including court cases with regard to NEET, totalling errors in board exams and the moderation policy.

The CBSE Chairman is an Executive of the Board who is assisted by the eight heads of departments including: -
- Secretary
- Regional Directors
- Executive Directors (JAB)
- Director (Information Technology)
- CTET & JNVST Director
- Director of Edusat and Vocational Education
- Controller of Examinations
- Professor & Director of Academics, Research Training and Innovation

Ministry of Human Resource & Development and Secretary of School Education and Literacy is the controlling authority of CBSE. It is the responsibility of the HRD Ministry to appoint the Chairperson for CBSE as well as other Heads of Departments.
